The Call to Serve ventured to the California University of PA as they were hosting a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition at the Manderino Library called Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente.

It was an honor and a privilege to meet Luis R. Clemente, the son of Roberto Clemente. Luis is the President and CEO of Roberto Clemente Sports City in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The Roberto Clemente Sports City is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing athletic opportunities and life lessons for inner city youth throughout Puerto Rico and beyond.

“Roberto Clemente’s accomplishments on the baseball field prefaced his work as a humanitarian, and, as with all great humanitarians, the vision lives on, continuing to touch lives and build new futures.”

For more information on the RCSC, please click here.

Our hope is that we can team up with RCSC and play a small role in carrying on the great humanitarian legacy of Roberto Clemente. Thank you to Luis Clemente for taking the time to speak with us.

We’ve safely made it back to Pittsburgh after an incredible 3 weeks on the road. Lives were changed, adventure was had, and people were helped. Mission accomplished. We are currently working on the documentary and hope to have finished by August. We will be touring the country in the fall spreading our message at colleges and high schools. If you are interested in having us speak and show our documentary, please contact adam@thecalltoserve.org

Thank you to all of our supporters and fans along the way. It’s because of you that we are where we are.

Hello Friends. We’ve been doing some crazy adventeering (adventure-volunteering). It’s what we do best! Yesterday, we worked with a woman named Lois. Her husband passed away ten years ago and she has got into some hoarding. We spent the afternoon helping Ms. Lois clean her apartment in order for her to live a safer life while remaining independent. Here is a photo of us helping Ms. Lois. She thought she was in the wrong house after we finished. Thank you to Love Inc. for doing this day in and day out. You guys are awesome.

A Taste

Well, we’ve made it to our 2nd location- Charleston, SC. We spent most of the day yesterday driving. It took about ten hours from Virginia Beach to Charleston. We had a few setbacks including our electric cap falling off and a few missed turns but that’s part of the adventure. Adam is currently at RV Camping World in North Charleston getting a replacement fridge in the rental RV since it died. (Shout out to Dave Kunes for getting us a timely appointment). The rest of the team is with Andrew volunteering with Rural Missions on St. John’s Island. We’re a day behind on videos and pictures due to limited internet access. Why can’t everywhere just have free wi-fi?

Our team has become a tight knit family in only a few days. Not only are we serving others on this trip, but we’re learning what it means to serve one another. Our tag-line for the trip is “Be Flexible” and we’re thrilled that everyone is going above and beyond that. Keep following Black Beauty and White Stallion on the road (RV nicknames!). Black Beauty has been getting a lot of looks and honks. We’re a getting a lot of interest and support at pretty much every gas station we stop at.

That’s all for now…Thanks for all your support and kindness as you follow our journey. Please tell your friends. And check out our store above. Enjoy the video below. It’s a small taste of the adventure thus far.

Inspiring? We think so.

We had a documentary screening at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe last night. It was a decent turnout and a lot of good came from it. We just received this forwarded email from an anonymous person who was there last night. Take a look.

“I just attended the seminar given by the people who are members of Call to Serve. This group is a non-profit organization founded by a couple of people who just want to go around and do some good. Their goal is simple. They travel the United States in a RV and do volunteer work everywhere. They do simple chores that help everyday people with everyday situations. Last summer they started in Pittsburgh and traveled to New York, Missouri, New Orleans, Houston, and San Diego and volunteered with chores such as volunteering in animal shelters, build homes, help with youth groups, help with soup kitchens, etc. They did all of this service and these projects in a 26 day period all throughout the United States. It was really interesting just to watch and see how a couple guys with a small plan and a RV can do so much help in so many places throughout our country. The documentary that they made was very inspiring just because it showed how much help they provided yet how much fun they had along their trip. After watching their documentary and hearing their seminar, I am curious to see how successful their program will eventually become. From the video and presentation alone I could tell that they had a solid foundation set. Their first summer in ’09 was just a starting year, now they have a video deal and intend on taking more RV’s and more people to volunteer in something that can do nothing but benefit the people and communities all throughout the United States. The potential of the “Call to Serve” program is simply extraordinary and I could see this program being very successful in the near future. I very much enjoyed the presentation and am glad that I took the time to learn about the “Call to Serve” tonight.”

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Autumn of Skysight Photography for allowing us to have a documentary screening at her studio. The film was perceived extremely well and we are excited to start showing it at colleges. Thanks to everyone who came out.
